  • Boys Soccer Drops First Round Thriller in Penalty Kicks

The NCS boys soccer game at Sonoma Academy on Wednesday night took full regulation time, plus two overtime periods and 18 penalty kicks combined by each team before a winner was finally declared. The game featured all the drama of a World Series game 7, which happened to be played at the same exact time, except this match-up featured the visitors from the Athenian School in Danville and the Sonoma Academy Coyotes. In the first half neither team could find the back of the net, though ball possession was domindated by Athenain. In the second half of play it was the Coyotes who took advantage and had a few more quality chances at scoring, but they also could never break through for the winning goal, which meant at the end of 80 minutes of play the score was tied at 0. After regulation both teams played two overtime periods of ten minutes each, if either team had scored the match would have ended with that team claiming victory and moving on to the NCS Quarterfinals. With the night air getting colder and the players growing fatigued, neither team managed to have any real threat of scoring in the overtime periods, so it was on to penalty kicks. After the first five players from each team had an opportunity to take their penalty kick the score was still tied at 4-4. From there each team alternated kicks until one team scored and the other missed. This would take four more players from each team, but ultimately it was Athenian who took the one goal advantage and would be recognized as the winner. Though it is a loss in the record books for the Coyotes everyone was proud of the effort, energy, and perserverance the boys showed throughout the match. The loss marks the end of the SA boys soccer season, but everyone in the program should be proud of the progress they made and the accomplishments they achieved.
  • Boys Soccer on Undefeated Streak to Finish League Play

The boys soccer team has put together an impressive run of games to play their way into NCS playoff contention.

Three weeks ago, the Coyotes looked unlikely to meet the criteria to apply for the NCS, but with two wins and three ties in their last five games, they are eligible to apply for NCS playoffs and have a good chance to be included in the 12 team bracket.

During the streak, the Coyotes tied league leading Roseland University Prep, St. Vincent, and Tomales, while picking up wins against Credo and Rio Lindo.

On Friday night, the Coyotes host Anderson Valley at 4:30 pm and before the game we will recognize the seniors for their contributions to the boys soccer team.
  • Soccer Teams Ready for Final Stretch of League Season

The boys and girls soccer teams are heading into the final stretch of league play with both teams in contention for an NCS playoff spot.

The girls are undefeated in league play with some key games remaining against St. Vincent and Roseland University Prep.

The boys host St. Vincent on Friday and with six games remaining, a strong finish will help them meet the criteria to apply for the NCS playoffs.

    Good luck to both teams!
