  • Basketball Season Comes to an End in NCS Tournament

The Sonoma Academy varsity girls and boys Basketball teams both earned selections to the North Coast Section Basketball Tournaments this past week.

The varsity girls earned a #10 seed, and home game because they were league champions, against the #7 seed Convent of the Sacred Heart from San Francisco. The varsity boys earned the #14 seed and a trip to the NCS Tournament after not qualifying the past two seasons. The boys opponent in the first round was defending Division 5 state champion St. Joseph Notre Dame from Alameda.

Even though both teams went into Wednesday night as the underdog, both Sonoma Academy teams represented themselves and their school in admirable fashion. The girls came out and grabbed a quick lead that took them into the second quarter, but the high level of play from Convent and inability to have enough shots fall for the Coyotes meant they were on the losing end as the final buzzer sounded. The girls had a great season and got some nice coverage in the Press Democrat, an article in which they described the girls season as "stellar".

The varsity boys played the best opponent they had seen all year, and one that just a year ago was the top team in all of California. The SA boys did not give in easily and played their hardest until the end of the game, but it was St. Joe's who took the victory and ended the Coyotes season. The boys had a fantastic season, the most successful since SA went to Division 5 by finishing with an overall record of 15-9. Congratulations to both Sonoma Academy varsity basketball teams.
  • Varsity Girls Capture League Championship

With a 41-16 win over Technology High School, the varsity girls basketball team captured the NCL 2 league championship with a record of 13-1 in league play. They finished one game ahead of second place Upper Lake who finished with a 12-2 league record. This is the second league championship for the varsity girls in the past three years.

We faced deficits in several league games and managed to make the necessary adjustments and plays to become champions! We beat the top contenders in our league with several different styles of play and had numerous players step up on different occasions to be the difference makers between a win and a loss. Congratulations to the players on this terrific accomplishment.

The girls received a 10 seed, but we will host our first round game Wednesday at Sonoma Academy at 7 pm because we are a designated league champion and our opponent, Convent of the Sacred Heart from San Francisco, is not. The full 16 team bracket can be seen here.

    Go Yotes!
  • Sonoma Academy Basketball Teams Win on Senior Night

All four Sonoma Academy basketball teams picked up wins in what was the final regular season home game of the season.

The JV girls started the night off with an important win over Tomales, who was also tied for first place in the league standings. The JV girls lost their final game of the year the next night at Upper Lake by a score of 32-30. Even though the season ended with a loss the girls managed to have a great season and were the co-champions of the league. Congratulations to all the players and coaches on the accomplishment.

The JV boys have played their best basketball in the second half of league play and pulled out another close win against Tomales. On Wednesday at Upper Lake they did it again with a dramatic comeback win, which means they finished the year by winning 5 of their last 6 games.

The varsity girls stayed undefeated in league with the 50-15 Tomales win, but then lost their first game in league play on Wednesday to Upper Lake. They have still guaranteed themselves at least a share of the league title, but with a win on Thursday against Technology they can clinch the league title outright.

The varsity boys played one of their best games of the season and beat Tomales 66-48 behind spectacular play from all 8 of their seniors. They followed that performance up with a 65-32 win at Upper Lake behind a high scoring second half. They have one regular season game left and will apply for the section (NCS) tournament that begins next week (seedings will be released on Sunday).
