Tom Birdsall

Tom is a co-owner of Black Kite Cellars with his wife, Rebecca Green Birdsall, an owner and manager of hotels, and a member of nonprofit and company boards in Sonoma County. Tom and Rebecca are parents to alumnus Duncan '18.
 
Tom grew up in the East Bay, received an AB in economics from UC Berkeley, and a Masters in Public Policy from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. Following graduate school he spent 18 years working to improve environmental policies and regulation as a partner in an economic and management consulting firm, working for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and large companies. He left that first career to found Sonoma Mountain Group to pursue a variety of interests in the non-profit and investment fields. In 2000 he helped to create the summertime Green Music Festival at Sonoma State University, and served as the Founding Executive Director of the Festival for its first three seasons. He also served as the Vice Chair of the Green Music Center Board of Advisors and helped get the GMC built and operating.
 
Tom has been active with a number of other nonprofit organizations, serving as a Director of the Sonoma Land Trust, a consultant to The Nature Conservancy, the Founder and President of California’s Artisan Cheese Festival (2006 to present), and Executive Director of the Donald and Maureen Green Foundation. Tom has been involved in developing and managing hotels and serves on the Board of Sonoma County Tourism. Tom and Rebecca have also been early investors in a number of local technology companies, including Advanced Fibre Communications and Enphase Energy, and Tom currently serves on the Board of Trevi Systems, a company developing low energy water purification technologies for desalination and industrial water reuse.
