Varsity Volleyball Completes Undefeated League Season, Captures First League Championship

This past week was a historic one for the SA Varsity Girls Volleyball team. On Tuesday night, the five seniors on the team (Julia Cameron, August Davis, Sierra Greene, Claudia Miller, and Tabatha Stewart) were celebrated in a pre-match ceremony for all of their contributions to the volleyball team, athletic program, and school. The team then came out motivated and jumped out to a big lead on the visitors from Credo and never looked back, winning the match three sets to zero. With the win the varsity volleyball team guaranteed themselves at least a share of the league championship, the first in the history of the volleyball program at SA.

The win against Credo set up an epic matchup in Upper Lake on Thursday night, with the second place Cougars needing to beat Sonoma Academy in the final game of the regular season to tie SA for the league title. The environment was high intensity, Upper Lake packed their gym for their senior night, and the Cougars came out determined to give the Coyotes a fight, winning the first set 25-20. This loss in the first set was the first set that the Coyotes had lost all season in league play, and it turned out it would be the last one as well, as SA rallied to win the next three sets in dramatic fashion. Sets in volleyball are played as the first team to 25 wins, with teams required to win by at least two points. So in the final set the tension in the gym was so thick you could cut it with a knife, the score was tied at 24 and it was anybody's to win. It was at this point the Coyotes stepped up to the challenge as they have all season, winning the final two points to win the match and complete an undefeated league season. Congratulations to the coaches and players on a terrific run this season, but it is not over yet! Next up the girls will now enter into the single elimination NCS playoffs that begin on Tuesday night. Time, location, and opponent will be announced this Sunday by the North Coast Section.

JV Girls Volleyball Completes Season
The JV Girls Volleyball team showed vast improvements this season, further demonstrating this at Upper Lake on Thursday night with an impressive performance against the first place Cougars.

Upper Lake jumped out to a big first set lead, but after a timeout by coach Mac Sweeney, the SA girls settled in and battled back to force a tight match. While the second set ended up being similar to the first, with the Cougars outlasting the Coyotes to win, the SA girls were completing passes, making proper rotations, serving strong, and hustling all over the court to do all they could to help their team.

While the season is now over for the JV girls, they can be proud of how far they have come as players. We know they will use this experience for future success on the court!
