Darren grew up and went to high school in Gilroy, California. Darren earned his BA in Mathematics from San Francisco State University. To help pay for tuition, Darren worked as a stagehand for Beach Blanket Babylon  at night to pay for college. Not only did the work help Darren pay for college, he met his wife there too!

After graduating from college he began teaching at Phillip and Sala Burton High School in San Francisco. He says even though it was a really hard place to teach, he’s glad he started his teaching career there because it was a place full of amazing kids. He later on went to teach at the Jewish Community High School for six years but after having a child, he and his wife decided to move out of San Francisco.

Darren joined our community as a math teacher the same year we moved to our new campus in 2008. Darren was one of our most popular math teachers for the ten years he taught. Now, as our Dean of Student Life, he oversees all aspects of the student experience here—from social activities to Community Meeting to the Coyote Cup, and much more. During his years as a teacher here, Darren also became an Honor Dean, along with Humanities Teacher Drew Gloger, helping to co-create, with students, our Honor Code as well as guding our Judicial Honor Council.

Darren loves the passing period between classes. He describes it as a "constant feeling of camaraderie." In his opinion, what sets us apart from other schools is the amount of programs that we offer to everyone. “We have outdoor programs, travel programs, exploratories, we have the shops and the garden. We try to teach so many different things that hopefully everybody can find a niche for themselves and find something that gets them hooked into something.”

In his spare time, Darren can often be found building furniture and doing other cool woodworking projects. He has taught multiple Intersession courses focused on woodworking. He's also a pretty exceptional hockey player.
