Over the President's Day long weekend, 18 members of the SA Debate team attended the Cal Debate Invitational at UC Berkeley.

In JV Policy debate, two teams earned winning records and advanced to elimination rounds: Emily Kassner-Marks '19 & Rachel Gothelf '19 and Isabelle Elder '19 & Max Brinegar '21. Emily and Rachel earned a 5-1 prelim record and were eliminated in the double octafinal round (top 32 teams). Isabelle and Max earned a 4-2 prelim record and then won their doubles round, making it all the way to the "Sweet 16" on Monday morning when they were eliminated by the top seed in the tournament. Additionally, all four of these JV debaters ranked in the top 20% of all the debaters in their division. Out of 158 debaters from across the country, Emily was #16, Isabelle #20, Rachel # 23, and Max #33.

Earning an even record in JV and only one win away from advancing to the elimination debates were Maya Homicz '21 & Jordan Rigney '21. In the same situation in Varsity Policy, Maya Nichols '18 & Gibran Hassan '19 were only a single win away from advancing.

Every single debater won at least one debate at this prestigious national tournament which included more than two thousand students from 180 schools across 17 states.

Huge thanks to Acting Dean of Students and Spanish teacher, Kiska Kosakowski, for helping chaperone and drive a van for those long days!

Next up the team will attend the State Qualifying Tournament on March 3rd at James Logan High School.
