McNeely Family Artist Residency

Fall 2025 Artist in Residence: Ashley Kim

The McNeely Family Artist in Residence for Fall 2025 is Ashley Kim.

Ms. Kim writes:

"Domestic objects fulfill multiple functions. They may be seemingly utilitarian and provide context for social connection and interaction. Yet, upon closer examination, they often function as containers that hold irony, meaning and narrative.

"My work embraces art making as an accessible way to address the issues and impacts of climate change that are often hidden and hard to grasp.  I collect and repurpose once used commercial packages as a way to reimagine and invent vessels and domestic objects infused with a new visual language, meaning and purpose. I hope that this way of making and material engagement will lead us to a better understanding of the relationship between the present climate change and our current consumption patterns. This way, my work may offer a positive, tangible response that not only underscores our contributions to global climate change, as in activism, but also provides a healthier channel to reduce anxiety that may surround the ever-growing climate crisis.

"All the while, my work is entirely and speculatively utilitarian, full of irony and, I hope, beauty.  It has a potential for holding memories of time and space, therefore, a history of us and for carrying personal meaning even to those users who select to use my work. Utilitarian vessels have a capacity to create space and be a witness for celebrating life as well as context to grieve and cherish life as in passing or death."

The McNeely Family

Connecting Artists and Students

We know that art education provides students with skills that benefit them in the art studio and beyond: creativity, focus, critique, planning, and much more. When students attend school surrounded by art, they learn to think artistically, and they develop an understanding that the role of the arts in our society is crucially important. This knowledge is vital to our students as they grow into the innovators and creators of tomorrow.

This is the impetus behind the McNeely Family Studio Residency, a program established in 2021 through the generosity of the McNeely family: Kevin, Rosemary, and Hannah Rose ‘19. The McNeelys are passionate about the arts in all of their forms, and this love for creative expression inspired them to endow a residency program that would attract established artists to be “embedded” in daily life at Sonoma Academy for an extended period of time.

The goal of the residency is to host working artists from around the country and the world who will work closely with our students, cultivating the next generation of talented artists and providing insight into what it means to pursue a career in visual art. Artists will give lectures, hold workshops, exhibit their own work, create community-based art projects, and meaningfully engage with students, parents, and staffulty.
