After earning his BS in mathematics and his teaching credential from Cal Poly SLO, Dan taught 7th and 8th grade for two years at a private, Catholic, and bilingual K-12 school in Juticalpa, Honduras. After deciding that he didn't want to live in Honduras for the long-haul, he flew back to Santa Rosa, his hometown. His friend, who was the assistant cross-country coach at Sonoma Academy, picked him up at the airport, and on the drive home told him that SA had a last-minute teaching position open for math. Now, after many years at SA, he is still loving learning, interacting with students, collaborating with colleagues, and taking on new challenges.
Dan’s favorite class to teach is Calculus because it is the pinnacle of mathematics in that it requires the students to use everything they have learned in their previous math classes to understand concepts that Leibniz and Newton discovered almost 400 years ago.
He loves working at SA because he appreciates the positive relationships with students, the opportunities for professional growth, the chances to connect with students outside the classroom such as when backpacking, biking, abroad, etc. He loves arriving on campus early in the morning when no one else is around when the sun is rising above the buckeye tree, the fog is lingering in the little valley beyond the soccer field, and the city of Santa Rosa below is still waking up.
