Meganstrives to know all about the goings-on at SA...even if she is usually behind the scenes herself. “Only a few students really know me, but I know a lot about many of them. Once in a while I’ll accidentally freak someone out by asking about their upcoming college orientation or track meet, and they’re like, wait, who are you?” She laughs, “I started bringing my bulldog mix, Bruce, to school, and I soon realized that he was a great excuse to get to know more of the students in person. He’s a campus celebrity now!”
Working closely with the Director of Marketing & Communications, Megan helps to tell the world about Sonoma Academy: in weekly newsletters, social media, on the web, and in the press. Megan says, “It is both a challenge and a privilege to try to convey what makes our school special, and I love to tell its stories to the greater community.”
Megan has been telling stories for many years. As a child in Northern Michigan, she was always writing her own books. She studied creative writing at Kenyon College, where she earned her BA, and in her graduate studies at the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop and Bennington College. Megan worked in communications and public relations in art museums, the food and beverage industry, and in educational institutions before coming to Sonoma Academy in 2017. In her free time, Megan’s two spunky daughters keep her very busy. She is an avid reader, and she is also working on a historical novel. Megan is a self-described “gym rat” and runner; her favorite races are themed half marathons at Disneyland.
Megan’s favorite aspect of life at Sonoma Academy is Community Meeting, which, she says, “is often an almost spiritual experience. We all come together to laugh, cry, applaud, and be inspired.” Megan also enjoys working with the Marketing and Communications Interns, a group of select students who assist with social media and content development, and she loves teaching group fitness classes for SA staffulty. “There's no team building like doing burpees and pushups with your co-workers!” she says.
