Hadestown, Teen Edition

November 12 through November 15 in the Performing Arts Center

Set in a New Orleans–inspired train station in a timeless, fictional world, Hadestown intertwines two ancient Greek myths: the story of Hades and Persephone, and that of Orpheus and Eurydice. Hermes, the messenger god, guides us through their stories.

Hades, god of the Underworld, has grown jealous, keeping his wife Persephone below longer than he should. Their troubled marriage has thrown the seasons out of balance, leaving the people of the Upperworld struggling with harsh weather and hunger. Below, Hades rules an Underworld imagined as an industrial factory, where workers trade their freedom for the promise of security.

Orpheus, a gifted young musician, believes he can write a song that will remind the gods of their love: a song so beautiful that it will ease Hades of his possessiveness and restore the seasons by giving Persephone more time in the Upperworld. Orpheus falls in love with a new girl in town, Eurydice, a young woman hardened by a life of surviving on her own. While he is absorbed in finishing his song, she struggles with cold and hunger. Hades offers her a ticket to the Underworld, promising food, shelter, and steady work. Although Eurydice loves Orpheus, the offer is too difficult to resist.

Her choice sends Orpheus on a journey to the Underworld to bring her home. But can his song move Hades, and will their love be enough to lead them back?
