Speech Stands Out at Stanford

We always do quite well at Stanford. With eighteen students, we scored eleven trophies, but that isn't the only high point. We enjoy the camaraderie and competition we always find with teams from all over the US and beyond. With the entries at the largest numbers they have ever been, it makes our success all the more meaningful.

The highlights include Gavin Patchet '19 making it to semis in varsity Impromptu, out of a field of about a hundred. The varsity duo by Byron Spars '19 and Alejandro Tonda '19 made it to finals, in which they got a seventh place trophy in a field of thirty-three. Additionally, Emma Hartley '20 "double trophied" in her two events, Spar and Oratory.

In novice duo, Sydney Sullivan '19 and Clara Galusha '19 went all the way to finals as well, ultimately taking sixth place!

Anika McCarthy-Belash '20 went all the way to finals in novice humorous interpretation, and her fourth-place trophy is testament that she belongs in varsity. She will be competing at the State Qual tournament on March 4, along with many others, for a bid to the State Tournament in Tracy, CA.

We had many other breaks to semi-finals, which earned us many other trophies. Our school name was definitely ringing out in Cubberly Auditorium!

Our team was greeted by SA alums and former speech captains, Kyle Duchynski '17 and Clara Spars '16, who are in their first years at Stanford. And who should be slouching past us? None other than Connor Duncan '17, who is a freshman at UC Berkeley, but came down to Stanford to judge debate. He proudly sported his "Bears" sweatshirt in Cardinal territory.
