Speech & Debate News from Laila and Brandon

by Laila McClay and Brandon Spars
Sonoma Academy wins big at the 2016 State Championship tournament: In Policy Debate, Aris Saxena '17 & Connor Duncan '17 were awarded as one of the top 12 policy teams in California and Caleb Kornfein '17 & Audrey von Raesfeld '17 one of the top 20 teams in California. In Parli debate, Jack Greenberg '16 & Liam Kolling '16 only lost one debate the entire tournament, made it all the way to Semifinals and were voted by the judges to be one of the top two teams in California! (A bizarre and incredibly controversial rule interpretation kept them out of the Final round).  Despite this setback, Jack & Liam took this all in stride, or more accurately, smoothly, on the wheels of their skateboards, which they used for all their movement around the campus for three days. On the Speech side, Clara Spars '16 earned a top-rank 1st place in one of her prelim rounds and only missed advancing to the Semi-finals by one rank/point. A special guest appearance by the one and only Chris Ziemer, Athletic Director, was both appreciated by the students for his support and for his demonstration of superior skateboarding talent using Jack's and Liam's pennyboards.
