Hillary loves Sonoma Academy, “because the arts are embraced here in a way that allows each student—and the community as a whole—to creatively evolve and try new things,” she says. After receiving her BFA in Illustration from Rhode Island School of Design, Hillary enrolled in an MA in Studio Art at New York University. Her artwork has appeared in many distinguished magazines, and she has she has shown her work in galleries and museums around the country.
Hillary is one of our founding teachers, and she was hired as the art teacher just as she was considering a job at an East Coast boarding school. The challenge of building a program from scratch appealed to Hillary, and she says, "it was amazing to me that I could do pretty much whatever I wanted! Every year, I find something new to keep me excited."
Students know that Hillary's classes provide a calm and creative environment that inspires, challenges, and allows them to express themselves through their work. Her favorite class to teach is Puppetry, “because it is full of laughter!” she says. Hillary enjoys the process of giving critiques in her classes, because they give the students a chance to reflect on their work and see what everyone has created.
Outside of school, Hillary is always creating. She is an avid blogger, and she often creates blogs about the artwork made in her classes. (You can view them here). She is passionate about world travel and about connecting with people from other cultures, and she is thrilled that we now have a thriving International Student program. "I was always the kid who befriended the exchange students in high school," she says, "and I have lived in Italy and France. I know how much we can all learn from people from other parts of the world."
Hillary’s goals as an artist and as a teacher are to make Sonoma Academy an art destination for the county, and continue the creativity in schools that is sometimes lost between elementary school and high school.
