SA Poetry Team Competes at Youthspeaks Teen Poetry Slam

On March 23, five young poets headed to the MIssion to add their voices to a high-level round of preliminary competition. Students from San Francisco and the East Bay dominated the stage, but our five poets proved that the North Bay had something to say too!

Maya Homicz '21, Grace Kallman '21, Ximena Barrientos '21, Colette Kane '21, and, of course, the leader of the team, Gabby Hudson '18, all took the stage and allowed their heartbreak, outrage, hope, and joy to be shaped by the art of poetry and shared in riveting, live performance.

Youthspeaks is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping young people around the country find their voices. More than ten professional, accomplished poets facilitated and moderated the event to create a safe, respectful, and reflective space for these young poets to try their voices out on such difficult topics as school shootings, sexual assault, body image, cultural identity, and others.

None of our students advance to the semis, but the van ride home was filled with exuberant energy. All were exhilerated by their time on the stage in front of a large audience at Galeria de la Raza on 24th Street and invigorated by the poems they heard from students who came from all walks of life from all over the Bay Area.
