The View from Here: Virtual Tour

As we approached this year’s Admissions season, it became clear that the events we’ve alway relied upon to introduce ourselves to prospective students and their families—Open House and Visit Day— would have to be radically reimagined. A team of staff members from Admissions, Communications, and Media Production rolled up their sleeves and worked together with our teachers to create a fantastic virtual Open House that could give newcomers an idea of what Sonoma Academy is about.

Translating the experience of visiting our campus to a virtual format seemed a bit more complicated. How could we help our potential applicants really see the welcoming green expanse of the Jackson Banke Amphitheater? How could we really show them the coziness of a classroom, the impressive shine of the Thinkway Toy Lab, the sunlit communal tables of the Commons? How could they get the full view of the bucolic golden hills that surround our school buildings?

Digital Media Coordinator Spencer Nilsen had a vision for a comprehensive, interactive virtual campus tour. He wanted to create a 3D first-person walkthrough of all of our campus spaces, indoor and outdoor, so people could really get a sense of the feel of our school grounds and buildings.

For those of us who haven’t been on campus for a while, the end result is a visual treat. Many thanks to Spencer and the rest of the team who created this stunning virtual campus tour so that prospective students can still “visit” SA during shelter in place!
