National Speech & Debate Association Memberships

Sonoma Academy is a member of the National Speech & Debate Association, the nation’s oldest and largest interscholastic speech and debate organization. The National Speech & Debate Association awards students points for participating in interscholastic speech and debate competitions. Students receive 6 points (Lincoln-Douglas, public forum) or 4 points (parliamentary) for each victory or 3 points (Lincoln-Douglas, public forum) or 2 points (parliamentary) for each loss. Students also receive points based upon their ranking in speech events. Each student who accumulates 25 points earns individual NSDA membership, referred to as the Degree of Merit.
