SA at Golden Gate Speech Association State Qualifier

The Speech and Debate teams had a busy two days on campus last week competing in the Golden Gate Speech Association State Qualifier. This tournament, which attracted 450 of the Bay Area's best high school Speech and Debate competitors, is our league's qualifying tournament for the California State Championship. The Bay Area league is one of the most competitive and rigorous in the state, so competing in this tournament is a challenge in itself.

In policy debate, the team of Maddy Jannes '22 and Tabatha Stewart '22 qualified to state for their second year in a row. Sophomores Luca Tonda and Lex Meyer were first alternates, and Zadie DeFord and Louise Estella were third alternates.

In speech, every single competitor we entered had a strong performance in the preliminary rounds, and all made it into the semifinal elimination round. Madigan Traversi '23 and Maddy Jannes '22 qualified to state in Duo Interpretation, finishing second overall in the tournament with a heartwarming piece exploring the importance of friendship. Pamela Gloger '24 and Nia Murray '24 were first alternates in Duo, and Talulah Juniper '23/Kyra Shi '23 were second alternates. Pavel Karabelov '22 and Aubrey Elder '23 were semifinalists in Impromptu.

Since Maddy qualified in two events, she will be giving up her policy debate spot to our first alternates, Lex and Luca.

Congratulations to all of our qualifiers and alternates! We are excited to represent SA at States in April.
