Visual Arts: Studio Art

Studio 1

This course builds upon the foundation arts course, further developing skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, and design. It is for the student who wants to become more adept with a variety of media. Assignments are more conceptually based than those in the foundation year. Projects challenge students to think creatively and interpret both realistic subject matter and abstract conceptual problems. Class critiques and homework play a large role in the structure of the course.


Studio 2


This course builds upon the foundation arts course and Studio I, further developing skills in drawing, painting, sculpture, and design. It is for the student who wants to become more adept with a variety of media. Assignments are more conceptually based than those in the foundation year. Projects challenge students to think creatively and interpret both realistic subject matter and abstract conceptual problems. Class critiques and homework play a large role in the structure of the course. This course is designed for the student who is in between intermediate and advanced levels and has already taken Studio I. It is offered during the same period as Studio I. Assignments are extensions of the Studio I projects with new sets of challenges.

Advanced Studio 

This course takes a more individualized, creative approach than Studio I. While students continue to develop conceptual and technical skills and use of media, they are encouraged to experiment a little more and take greater risks. Presentation becomes more important at this level. Assignments generally last longer and require more thought, preparation, and research before the actual piece may be started. Organization of time is critical in working on these long-term projects.
Critiques and group discussions play a major role in the curriculum. In Advanced Studio, students gain more expertise in working from the figure and work directly from models. The final exam is drawing studies from a nude model.
A variety of assignments challenge the student’s ability to come up with original, creative approaches to conceptual problems in a visual format. At the beginning of the course students are offered a choice to either continue with assigned projects the last month of the semester or spend the month working on an independent project prescribed by the student. This is a good time to develop an art portfolio for college or two explore a medium or subject matter in which that a student is particularly interested.
