Visual Arts: Art of Puppetry

What role have puppets played throughout history? They have been used in rituals, to instruct, illustrate religious stories, and entertain adults and children. Puppet shows have enabled people to critique society and the government.
By studying the ancient art form of puppetry, students learn about the history of puppets around the world and how puppetry continues to be an important art form today. This course includes writing, drawing, painting, carving, building, rehearsal, video, and public performances.

By studying the ancient art form of puppetry, students learn about the history of puppets around the world and how puppetry continues to be an important art form today. This course includes writing, drawing, painting, sculpture, animation, carving, building, video, and public performance. Students learn how to make shadow, hand, rod and sock puppets, marionettes, and large-scale pageant puppets. Performance is an inherent part of the course. In addition to fabricating the puppets, students perform traditional plays, new renditions of old plays, and creations of their own. If you like to do all kinds of art and play, this is the course for you!

In 2015-2016, the class will collaborate with Trompin' Manikins & The Hubbub club, a local puppet troupe and crazy marching band performing at one or two events. The final will be a puppet video.
