Student Profiles

G.E.

Class of 2008

How did you decide to come to SA?

I shadowed here at the end of 7th grade because of an almost a last-minute decision to skip 8th grade. I wanted to come here because I liked the teachers and the classes were actually interesting instead of a whole bunch of busywork. They actually had discussions and things. It looked fun but not easy or boring.

About SA:

All the students here are really nice and accepting of other people. It’s more open so you’re freer to do something crazy or to be a different character.

On SA teachers:

They really care about you and are always asking you how you are doing. They are interested and don’t worry about stupid things like whether you did your work in pencil or ink. They’re interested in your learning the material and becoming more interested in it. We have labs and projects instead of lectures all the time.

Favorite classes:

Math, science, and humanities. But I really like art and French too. Actually I like all my classes here.

On community service:

I’m doing tutoring now and I really like it. I am pretty patient with teaching people—except my sister—and my little girl needs help because she’s bright but English isn’t her first language. It’s nice because I’m helping someone and can actually see it. It’s not like sending money somewhere where you know it probably helps but you don’t know how.

What do you love to do?

I love to read. My family has all these pictures of me reading, including one of me standing up on a chair reading, one with my head hanging completely off the couch, one of me on the stairs…

Favorite books?

I read everything. I don’t have a favorite genre—just go in phases.

What have you tried here that you’ve never done before?

Joined Amnesty International and the debate club. I hope to start a debate team next year that could compete in tournaments.

What else is important to you?

Animal rights. I’m a vegetarian but my mom makes me eat fish sometimes. Also human rights, which is why I work with Amnesty.

Teachers have helped me through tough personal and scholastic times. They haven’t let me slip through the cracks and be as quiet as I wanted to be when I first came here. They’re motivating.

Being on teams for our school has taught me a lot about what it means to stick with something and how rewards come to you when you deserve them.

I have this confidence that’s allowed me to get into leadership in and outside of school. I didn’t have that kind of confidence at my old school.

At SA I met different people, and thought, I’ll give it a shot. I started trying new things. You can do stuff here you can’t do other places—travel, play sports, get a laptop computer, and if you want to learn this is the place.

This year I got involved in fundraising for Village Hopecore International (a micro-lending program in Chogoria, Kenya). A group of students and I put together an art auction.

My freshman year, they asked if I wanted to act in the play or do technical stuff. I wanted to be stage manager. I ended up really liking it.
